Landscape Maintenance

The City of Palos Verdes Estates maintains public landscapes throughout the community, including parklands, street medians, open spaces, walking paths, and parkways. These maintenance efforts help preserve the City’s appearance, support safety, protect infrastructure, and promote the long-term health of public landscape assets.

Landscape maintenance in Palos Verdes Estates

The City of Palos Verdes Estates contracts with Bennett Landscape to perform landscape maintenance services, under the oversight of the Public Works Department. This work includes ongoing care of landscaped public areas throughout the City.

The information below provides an update on the City’s current approach to herbicide use as part of that landscape maintenance program, along with related resources and contact information.

Update on Herbicide Use

Following significant community interest and feedback on the City’s approach to herbicide use, the City is providing this expanded update to supplement the information previously shared.

At its January 14, 2026 City Council meeting, the Council reviewed options related to herbicide use in the City’s landscape maintenance program following a 90-day citywide pause initiated in October 2025. During this pause, staff evaluated operational impacts, service levels, safety considerations, and alternative maintenance methods.

After reviewing the findings, the City Council approved Option 2A, prohibiting the use of herbicide in all areas of the City with the exception of specific areas where manual vegetation control is unsafe, impractical, or ineffective—such as steep slopes, restricted-access locations, and areas with significant safety constraints. No additional contract funding was approved as part of this action.

Key Update

Herbicide use remains prohibited in all other areas of the City.

Landscape Maintenance Versus Fire Safety Weed Abatement

Weed abatement services differ from landscape maintenance services and are performed by different vendors. Weed abatement services are intended to provide broader vegetation clearing, such as creating spacing between shrubs and trees, reducing flashy fuels, and lowering fire risk. These services are typically completed once per year.

Landscape maintenance services apply to more manicured and detailed public areas throughout the City and are completed periodically throughout the year. For more information on fire safety weed abatement services, please visit the City’s Fire Safety Weed Abatement webpage.

No Parking

There may be “No Parking” signs posted on streets indicating the specific dates work will be performed in landscape areas near your home. Parking restrictions will be posted 48 hours prior to the work being performed. During the time crews are present and the work is being performed, access to landscape areas may be limited.

Please help ensure landscape maintenance activities are successful by observing the dates and times of posted “No Parking” signs during working hours, which are Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4 PM, excluding City observed holidays.
