The Office of the State Fire Marshal, a division within CAL FIRE, develops fire safety regulations, enforces building codes, and promotes public safety through education and inspections. Together, they work to reduce fire risks and protect communities across California and in Palos Verdes Estates.

 

CAL FIRE’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) Viewer, is an interactive map tool that helps identify wildfire risk levels across California. This resource provides detailed information on areas designated as moderate, high, or very high fire hazard zones. Understanding your property's fire risk can help you take proactive steps to improve safety and resilience.


On March 24, 2025, the State Fire Marshal released revised recommendations for Fire Hazard Severity Zones to local agencies. The City of Palos Verdes Estates was identified as having Moderate, High, Very High or a combination of Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) within our jurisdiction.

The City Council will review and consider adoption of the new map within 120 days of the StateFire Marshal communicating official mapping recommendations.
