For the first time, the City of Palos Verdes Estates is using goats for weed abatement in Lunada Canyon. A herd of approximately 400 Fire Grazer goats will spend the next two to three weeks clearing mustard, acacia and other hazardous brush from 20 acres of City parkland. “Goats are a popular alternative to traditional methods because they make very little noise, only leave fertilizer behind, and are as cute as can be,” said Interim City Manager Carolynn Petru. The goats are already a familiar sight on the Peninsula, as they are used the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, some of the other Peninsula cities, and the School District for many of their weed abatement projects.

Fire Grazer’s RV and trailer will be parked near the intersection of Paseo Lunado and Via Rivera. The public is welcome to stop by and say “hello,” but please remember that the goats are working and the movable fencing has a light electric current running through it. And lastly, please do not attempt to feed the goats.  For more information, please contact the Public Works Department at (310) 378-0383.
