Councilmember James Vandever joined the City Council in 2015. He served as Mayor from April 2017 through April 2018. He was appointed to the City’s Planning Commission in 2007 and served as chair of the Planning Commission from 2009 until 2015.
He has been active in a number of home owners associations, most recently serving on the Advisory Board of the Malaga Cove Homeowner’s Association. His volunteer activities include serving as chair of the finance committee for the Rolling Hills United Methodist Church for a number of years.
Councilmember Vandever has lived on the Palos Verdes Peninsula for the last thirty years. He and his wife Kim moved to Palos Verdes Estates in 2006 and between them have raised six children in Palos Verdes schools. Kim works as a Realtor in the Palos Verdes community.
Councilmember Vandever graduated from UCLA and the UCLA School of Law, graduating Order of the Coif. He began his legal career as an attorney for the District Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Service. He has been employed as an attorney and executive for a family owned business that focuses on commercial real estate for more than 30 years.
Councilmember Vandever is committed to serving the residents of the Palos Verdes Estates community by working to preserve and enhance the unique qualities, character and beauty of our City.
