Chief of Police Appointed
Over the past several months, the City of Palos Verdes Estates has been very fortunate and appreciative to have two dedicated Captains, Anthony Best and Mark Velez, who have served expertly as Acting Police Chief over the past several months. They have provided exceptional leadership of the Police Department and have been integral to sustaining the quality of service and commitment of community policing that Palos Verdes Estates residents expect.
At this time, the City is now pleased and proud to announce that Mark Velez has been appointed the Palos Verdes Estates Chief of Police. Chief Velez started with Palos Verdes Estates Police Department as a Dispatcher-Jailer in 1989 while concurrently serving as a Reserve Officer in 1990-1991. Soon thereafter, and through the ensuing years, in recognition of his skills, education, and knowledge, Velez promoted through a variety of Police Department position to Captain. Chief Velez has earned his PhD in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and also holds a Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern Law School.
As Chief of Police for Palos Verdes Estates, Chief Velez will be focused on strengthening public trust and confidence in the Police Department, enhancing community safety and crime prevention programs, and providing the support and training of Police personnel. “I look forward to bringing 28 years of experience and a “can-do” approach to working in the community and with our excellent Police Department to achieve success and exceed expectations” according to Chief Velez. “This will include enhancing connections between the community and the Police Department, implementing smart innovations and technology to prevent crime and improve service, represent the City and achieve our goals of community policing,” says Chief Velez.
In selecting Chief Velez, I am impressed by his plans for implementing the policies, priorities and budget established by the City Council, addressing the current needs and fiscal situation of the City, his long-term vision for community policing, and commitment to working with our excellent women and men of our Police Department. Chief Velez is focused on building our volunteer programs, strengthening disaster readiness and response programs, addressing traffic issues, enhancing our crime prevention programs, and responding to the community impacts of past and future State legislation and propositions that threaten the safety and security of the public. Chief Velez recognizes the unique and special character of Palos Verdes Estates, and his strengths will serve the community well now and into the future.
The City conducted an internal, promotional recruitment for Police Chief and engaged a panel for evaluating the applicants. In making the appointment of Mark Velez as Chief, we are thankful to Captain Best for his continuing commitment and service to the forward progress of our Police Department.
The community is welcome to meet and congratulate Chief Velez at a reception in the Palos Verdes Estates Council Chambers on January 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
