How has your understanding of local government changed?
My only knowledge of local government came from a history class I took over a decade ago. Local level government was a very brief portion of the class. Seeing the inner workings of such an entity has given me fresh perspective on how it's run, services it provides.
What were you most surprised about interning at a government office?
In a lot of instances, isn't very different from private business in a structural sense. There is a manager that oversees all of the departments, department heads that oversee their own department, and so on. Where I'm most surprised is in the power of the residents. At this level of government, residents votes have a direct and almost immediate impact on daily operations. Also, many residents seem to be engaged within City Hall and its staff.
