2017 Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run
The Torch Run has grown to include participation in over 48 nations. Since its inception 33 years ago, more than 100,000 law enforcement officers have raised $500 million for the Special Olympics movement worldwide. The Torch Run has become the largest public fundraiser for Special Olympics.
The Southern California Law Enforcement Torch Run involves more than 450 officers who proudly carry the Special Olympics Torch more than 1,500 miles and through more than 175 communities. For athletes and officers alike, the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics is a story of success, love, respect and commitment between law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes. Once again Palos Verdes Estates Police Officers will begin the 4th leg of this 67 leg race which begins in the South Bay and ends, five days later in Long Beach.
On the morning of Monday, June 5, 2017, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department received the torch from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at the south City entrance (3000 blk. of PVDW) and ran with the torch 3.5 miles (on a 12 minute mile pace) before handing the torch to the Torrance Police Department.
